Located in the East Side of Wilmington adjacent to Wilmington's Riverside Community, East Side Charter School serves over 400 students from the surrounding communities. ESCS was founded “to educate children in a safe, caring and nurturing environment so that they can excel academically and socially.” ESCS is labeled as innovative because of its 1:16 teacher to student ratio, 11 month calendar, on-site before and after school programs and mandatory parental involvement at in the school. East Side Charter School and Communities in Schools of Delaware developed a partnership that enables CIS to coordinate integrated student services and improve parental involvement at East Side.
CIS of Delaware was thrilled to take on staff members Ashley Kaufman and Rebecca Stahl-Levy to support the new East Side Charter School (ESCS) site. Before becoming the Site Director for East Side Charter, Becky Stahl-Levy lived in Allentown, PA and worked as a case manager and behavioral specialist with CIS Lehigh Valley. Rebecca’s experience case managing students and families, providing home visits, and conducting peer mediation and attendance monitoring help to provide a seamless transition from Lehigh Valley to East Side Charter. In addition to her experience with CIS Lehigh Valley, Rebecca also received a BA in Psychology from Humbold State University in Arcata, California. Ashley Kaufman works alongside Rebecca Stahl-Levy as the Project Coordinator for CIS of Delaware at ESCS. Ashley graduated from the University of Delaware with a BA in Psychology and recently received a Masters of Education in School Counseling from Wilmington University. While at Wilmington University, Ashley completed two counseling internships and collected over 900 counseling hours and over 200 classroom observation hours. Communities in Schools of Delaware, the staff of East Side Charter, the students and their parents are pleased to have such dedicated staff members working on their side at East Side Charter.
As Site Director this year, Rebecca will support students and staff by coordinating school wide crisis intervention, supportive guidance, bullying prevention and parental involvement strategies agreed upon for effectively supporting East Side Charter School. Our goal is to increase frequency of home visits, parental involvement in the learning process, build self esteem by reinforcing positive behavior, and enhance personal, behavioral and social development. CIS will also continue developing and maintaining a case management and services for approximately 60 students identified by ESCS staff. CISDE staff will focus on assessing social and developmental issues and use strategies to work on the following areas: anger management, conflict resolution, decision making and ethics, organizational management and goal setting.
In the fall of 2008, Communities in Schools received generous financial support through Barclays Bank and ING Direct to expand services to parents, students and faculty at ESCS. Ashley Kaufman is taking on the responsibility of maintaining and improving the existing mentoring program over this school year. Currently, mentors from Barclays Bank, Hercules, NIEL, and Potter Anderson currently serve over 100 students at East Side Charter. By improving the mentoring program at East Side there is hope that more youth will become empowered to realize their full potential through a one to one relationship with a caring adult. This year, ESCS and CIS hope to increase the number of students mentored and introduce new mentors into the program while still providing a quality program. For more information about mentoring opportunities at East Side Charter School please contact CIS or Ashley Kaufman at East Side Charter School.
